SUMMARY:Eastern District Practice 12 July 2022 - Talland
DESCRIPTION:In July it really is going to be Talland on Tuesday 12 July.  This is a wonderful tower which is built into rock overlooking Talland Bay. Viv Tregellas has kindly offered to open the tower at 7 pm so that we can go up to the roof to see the spectacular views across the bay. It’s not such a big climb as it might be – because of the lay of the land the steps to the roof start fairly high up the tower. Ringing will start at 7.30. I am attaching a poster for your tower. \nSummer and autumn ringing is yet to be planned but we have got a date for the course on “Call change conducting”. This will take place on two consecutive Sunday afternoons – 31st July and 7th August – it is a single two session course – venue yet to be confirmed. If you are interested in coming to this course please let me know. \nHope to see you soon \nSue McClaughryED Sec \n  \nPoster to Print for Tower \n  \n

SUMMARY:RWNYC 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Ringing World National Youth Contest for the Whitechapel Trophy\, first held at St Saviour\, Pimlico in March 2011\, was initially conceived as a “one off” event as part of the Ringing World’s Centenary celebrations. However\, after the resounding success of this first contest\, in which twelve teams took part\, The Ringing World decided to hold the National Youth Contest again and thus it became firmly established as an annual event in the ringing calendar\, held on various Saturdays in June or July. The second contest in Birmingham attracted 15 teams\, with 16 teams entering both the 2013 and 2014 contests in York and Worcester respectively. The 2015 contest in Oxford attracted a record entry of 19 teams from across the country. \nSince the first contest\, the overall format had remained broadly the same\, with competition ringing taking place during the course of the day on an easy going\, fairly light ring of 8 (or back 8 at a 10 bell tower)\, with a 20 minute slot for each team (5-6 hours of ringing with 16 teams)\, judged by 1 Chief Judge\, assisted by usually 3 younger judges. In addition to the competition ringing\, general ringing at other towers and other activities have been organised. However\, it was always recognised that there was a limit to the size of the entry which could be accommodated using this format\, and the record entry at Oxford highlighted the need to make some strategic decisions about the future direction of the RWNYC to ensure that it could continue to accommodate an increasing number of applicants whilst maintaining the quality of the experience for everyone who participates. A consultation exercise therefore took place\, as a result of which changes to the format were implemented for 2016\, 2017 and 2018. \nThe contest now takes place on a fixed date each year – the first Saturday in July. The rules can be viewed here

SUMMARY:Coordinated Ring to celebrate HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee
DESCRIPTION:As you will be aware of the extended Bank Holiday in June to mark HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. Bell ringing in churches across the UK and Commonwealth will be marking this celebration with a coordinated call to ring to coincide with the Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s taking place on Friday 3rd June . There are also plans to ring across London on the Sunday as part of the Pageant. These are the two coordinated activities the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers is supporting. \nOf course the weekend lends itself to plenty of opportunities to ring and you may have already seen reference asking bells to ring between 19:52 to 20:22 on Sunday 5th June to close the extended weekends celebrations. \nPlease share this information with your contacts to encourage early planning of events and liaison between church authorities and local bellringers\, if this hasn’t been done already\, particularly if ringing is going to take place more often than usual. \n  \nClick here for further information and some suggestions for what could be rung especially for the Jubilee.

SUMMARY:Pillaton and St. Mellion Handbell Ringers Perform at TDGR Ringing Festival
DESCRIPTION:It was the end of a very different year for all of us\, The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (CCCBR) had launched a You Tube Competition in order to showcase the best ringing videos in the world and guess who won Overall Winner in 2020!!!???\nThe Pillaton and St. Mellion Handbell Ringers\n“The prize for the ‘People’s Choice’ in the Central Council’s monthly YouTube competition\, the champion of champions\, goes to the Pillaton and St Mellion Handbell Ringers for their video of them ringing a plain course of Plain Bob Triples by the lapping method. This really captured the imagination\, with comments describing it variously as ‘fabulous’\, ‘absolutely incredible’\, ‘brilliant to watch’\, ‘astonishing’\, and even ‘soothing’.”\nIf you haven’t seen it\, please click here\nTDGR loves to showcase the best of Cornish Ringing and we’re lucky enough to announce that they’ll be performing for us on TDGR Ringing Festival Day – May 21st at St. Petrocs Bodmin from 2pm. They’ve even said:\n“We don’t mind if other handbell ringers would like to use our bells or if any who have not rung handbells before would like to have a go.”\nAs with all workshops\, talks and competitions running within the TDGR Ringing Festival\, they’re free of charge\, but booking is essential to secure your seat as places are limited. SUMMARY:Workshop: Applying for grants and funding
DESCRIPTION:Our Very own Bell Restoration Officer has bucket loads of experience to share within this workshop which will form part of the TDGR Ringing Festival Day.\nPlease register in advance to secure your place\, as time and space are at a premium and places are limited. Register your attendance with secretary@tdgr.org.uk places will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis\, so book now to avoid disappointment!\nSue says\n“In 2018 we decided to rehang the bells at St Andrew’s Church\, Calstock. The project started with an estimated price tag of £46\,000 and there was about £8\,000 in the bell fund.\nThe issue of how to raise the rest of the money was the corner stone of the project. I knew nothing about fundraising\, which I am sure was obvious in many of my early grant applications but getting the application right is of paramount importance. This talk is designed to give some ideas about how to fundraise for any project and how to prepare a good grant application.”

SUMMARY:The TDGR Cake-Off
DESCRIPTION:Love baking?\nWhy not enter this year’s TDGR Cake – Off?\nThere are three categories for entries:\n1.	A plate of 12 Individual Cakes\n2.	A plate of 12 Fruit Scones\n3.	Traditional Cake\nWe’re not the W.I. so we’re NOT taking this extremely seriously\, it’s just a bit of fun\, designed to help the host tower with catering for the AGM and all-important Ringers Tea!!! We also know that ringers love baking!\nWhen is the Cake-Off?\nIt’s at this year’s TDGR Ringing Festival at St. Petroc’s Bodmin on Saturday 21st of May. All Cake-Off Entries are to be received by Bryony Dorrington and the Team at St. Petrocs\, Bodmin from 10:00am that day. Please DO NOT pre-slice your entries!\nPlease email Miranda: wdsec@tdgr.org.uk or phone: 01736 811182 with details of your entries before the 14th of May.\nThis is so we can guarantee enough table space for all the entries! Entry slots will be allocated on a first come first served basis. And yes\, if you like\, you may enter more than one category and more than one entry in the same category. Any entries received on the day without prior notification must be eaten at 10 am on the day and will not be judged – we simply will not have enough table space – you have been warned!!\nEveryone will help judge the best in each category with a small prize awarded (and the kudos) for each winner. In the event of a ‘draw’ or any dispute the Eastern District Ringing Master’s decision will be final.\nSecretary@tdgr.org.uk

SUMMARY:Carol Service
DESCRIPTION:All welcome to attend the Guild Carol Service this year held at Kenwyn and we’re extremely excited to welcome Bishop Philip! \nKenwyn Church bells were refurbished earlier this year (£20\,000) appeal\, and have been ringing again since July. \nThere will be general ringing from 4.00-5.00pm on 11th December with tea and cake available.\nAt 5.00pm there will be a “Nine Lessons and Carols” type service\, and we’re anticipating that Bishop Philip will offer a short homily and prayers of thanksgiving/re-dedication for the work to the bells.\nThe Service will be followed by mulled apple juice and mince pies.\nAll very welcome to attend\, please do come along. \nNorman Mattingley\, Kenwyn Tower Captain writes… \n“There will be refreshments \, tea/coffee cake etc (but not a ringers tea) from about 4.00 pm (designed for those who have spent the afternoon shopping in town) and mince pies are to be served after the service with mulled apple juice. I understand that some Guild members are planning to bring their own ‘fortification’ to add to the apple juice but that is entirely unofficial. The Diocesan Bishop who is also the Patron of our Guild is to be at the service but he has also expressed a wish to meet the ringers and the opportunity is possibly there with either cake or mince pie in hand. Bribes for introductions may be the custom in other parts of society but regretfully not with us. I suspect a donation plate may be found somewhere! \nThere will be ringing both before and after the service so that we may all impress the Bishop with our talents and it is our wish that if you have not ‘tried’ our refurbished bells\, you take this opportunity to have a ring. \nIt would be lovely if we could get volunteers from all districts to read very short lessons as part of the service. Please get in touch with secretary@tdgr.org.uk if you would like to read one – there are six to read in total! \nPlease come along and join in. We expect you to enjoy it. It will be so much better if we are able to fill the church.” \nNorman
