This month we lost a stalwart of the Northern District. Ruth Reeves died peacefully on Wednesday, 10th April. From a Guild perspective Ruth served for many years as Northern District Secretary and she was also on the Standing Committee. At a local level she looked after many towers in her vicinity along with her husband Andrew. Her positive approach and “get on with it” attitude ensured there were ringing possibilities for everyone. Ruth was an active ringer in all disciplines and will be greatly missed by many. On a personal level she was with me in my first Full Peal at Landulph and my first on 8 bells at Gulval in 2004. RIP dear Ruth.
My first excursion this month was down to the Western District for their AGM. Paul was the host tower and what a great welcome I received. There was a really good attendance and several new members were elected.
Up ‘ere in the East we had a cracking district practice at Stoke Climsland. Although a little bit lighter on numbers than usual, newer members were able to get in some good practice ringing on Stoke’s class 8. I also had the chance to present a new member certificate to Anton Parusov as well as several Long Service certificates.
20th April saw me chairing another Standing Committee meeting down at Kenwyn. Here we welcomed a couple of new members onto the committee, Richard Ryder as Health & Safety Officer and Julian Trick the new Northern District Chairman. We are looking forward to working with you both.
Following on from this, Claire B, with the help of Hayley Y, had another Youth practice at Lanydrock in readiness for the RWNYC in London on the 6th July. I was unable to attend as unfortunately Sarah’s car broke down but I hope to get to the next one. After getting Sarah back on the road I managed to pop down to Landulph to catch up with my East Cornwall Association friends at their Final of the Evening League. 8 teams competed with St. Columb taking the trophy. I love my yearly excursion to this event.
On the 24th April Sarah and I picked up the Hon. Sec. and we all attended the Western District Open Practice at St. Gluvias. It was a fine evening with a good attendance and special thanks to Geoff Cook, assisted by Bob W, for running a busy practice.
So, now we come to May with the Guild AGM at Calstock. It would be great to see as many people as possible so see you there!!!
Keep ringing!
