President’s Blog – January 2025

Happy New Year!

A service of Thanksgiving was held at South Hill Church in memory of John Body. In the future I intend to write an article about the development of change ringing in East Cornwall. Lots of ringing has taken place and more is planned in the future. One of note was a QP at Calstock on the 2nd January which included Richard Warwick. This is where John rang his first peal in January, 1980 with Richard ringing the 3rd. https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/memoria.php?id=20136

Carolyn H our Ringing Performance Secretary was ‘right on’ on the 1st January giving out the TDGR Ringing Stats for last year!

On the 14th Dad and I went to North Tamerton to ring on their newly restored bells. We rang a very well struck Call Change Peal of 120 St Dominica’s 3rd Hunt Doubles which included Jack Waddington – his first Call Change Peal at first attempt. It was great to have Ernie (TC) on the 5th who is Jack’s Grandad. Well done Jack and great to ring with you again Ernie.

North Tamerton – refurbished back in the belfry (D Paul Mason)

I would like to congratulate George Stevens of Perranarworthal on Conducting his first full peal on Friday 17th at Gwennap at the tower in which he learnt to ring. He was taught by the late Norman Mattingley.

Wednesday 22nd saw the first District Practice of the Eastern District this year at St Dominic. It was good to see some faces from the far East of our District. We had another cracking evening in a very warm Church.

25th saw another busy Saturday for the TDGR. We had an in-depth Standing Committee meeting in the Lychgate Room at Kenwyn with 18 agenda items on the menu, all sorted in under 2hours 15mins including a break! Many thanks to all the Guild Officers for their continued good work. Following on from this the Central District had a practice at St Dennis and the Youth’s were in action at Gulval.

Sunday 26th marked the 99th birthday of Doug Petipher, former Tower Captain of Calstock. A QP and CCP were planned, but due to the very inclement weather these were been postponed to another time. Is Doug the oldest member?

Congratulations go to Neil Scoble of Bodmin and Glynis Jones of St Mawgan on achieving 40 years of ringing. Certificates have been presented by Hayley and Phil Tremain and I send my congratulations to them both.

Matthew Rodliffe recently rediscovered the original St Columb 500 Call Changes composed by the late Alan Rodliffe. Matthew conducted this to mark St Columb Ringers Dinner/AGM weekend.

Unfortunately, I have been asked to report that due ill health and various other circumstances, Jemma Hoare has stood down as Education Officer as in time she will be moving out of the area. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jemma for her dedicated work on behalf of the Guild and I wish her well for the future.

And finally this month, on the 30th, Dave Pitcher (SS Nicholas & Faith, Saltash) rang his first Call Change peal at first attempt at St Stephens by Saltash in memory of Andrew Lyne. Well done Dave.

And finally, finally! Memberships subscriptions are now due for 2025!

Keep ringing!
