President’s Blog – May 2025

HOT OFF THE PRESS – The TDGR Annual report is now available. When I was elected President this was one of my missions to get our Guild Report reinstated. Malcolm Day duly offered and accepted the challenge and it is now available to members. Thank you Malcolm.

The TDGR Guild Report 2025

A Peal was arranged at Mabe to mark the Golden Wedding anniversary of Richard and Jane Mann (Jane is a ringer at Constantine). Congratulations to you both.

Many towers rang for the VE Day celebrations on Thursday, 8th May, consisting of Rounds, Call Changes and Quarter Peals. Great to see so many ringers and towers involved.

On Sunday, 11th May a Quarter Peal was rung at St. Gluvias in which Daniel O’Hanlon rang his first quarter peal on a working bell. Well done Daniel.

Saturday, 17th May saw the Guild AGM at Lanteglos by Camelford with ringing beforehand at Advent. There was a good attendance despite the new Bishop of Truro, David Williams, being inaugurated only a couple of hours or so before! The general business was conducted and I was re-elected for my final year of Office as President. Hayley Young stood down as Secretary and Bob Woods (Helston) was duly elected as her successor, and Matthew Rodcliffe was elected Public Relations Officer.  Well, Hayley, “the Ladock Maid”, what can I say? Thanks for being an excellent and efficient Secretary for the Guild. I know my role has been made easier because of your assistance and passion for ringing, both in general and particularly in Cornwall. Long may this continue.

The following day I went to the service ringing at St. Stephens-by-Saltash to present Oli with his membership certificate. He now becomes the third generation of a ringing family! Well done Oli.

Thursday, up ‘ere in the East, we had our District practice at St.Nicholas & Faith, Saltash. Unfortunately Dad and myself were unable to attend as I’d forgotten that we had booked tickets to see Only Fools and Horses at the Theatre Royal! The practice was duly run by our newly elected Deputy Ringing Master, Chris Beckett, with help from Kev Edwards and Sue McClaughry.

On Saturday, 24th May the Central District had a practice at Bodmin but sadly I was unable to attend as I had been asked to judge the Minor Final at Kenn for the Devon Association of Ringers. Teams from Kenn and Ide were victorious and qualified for the Major Final next month.  It was pleasing to see some novice teams entering.

On the Bank Holiday Monday, with a 06.30hrs. start for me from Saltash train station, I travelled up to Exeter to judge the Devon Ringers Council Call Change competitions at the Cathedral and St. Petroc. This event consisted of a 10 and 8 bell from “up” at the Cathedral (on the front 10 and back 8 of the front 10), and a standard 6 bell with rise, 60 on 3rds and lower at St. Petroc’s.  It was a long day with only a 1 hour break but Hayley did get us some Fero Rosais to keep the concentration up!

The Western District had an Open practice at Phillack on the 27th and as Sarah and I were in the area we popped in to see them. There was good attendance with the practice being run by newly elected Ringing Master, Martin Spittle, and the tower put on excellent refreshments.

The following Thursday I travelled to Marhamchurch to present some long service certificates, one to Helen Barnes for 40 years and the other to Dave Garvie for a whopping 70 years. It was good to have the Northern District Chairman, Julian, with me for this monumental milestone.

On the final day of the month the Youth were once again in action this time down at Tuckingmill.

All in all not a bad month of action in the TDGR hey?!

Keep ringing!
