As last month another busy time on the ringing scene in Cornwall.
Bonfire Night saw our own Temperance ringing her first Call Change Peal at her first attempt at Pillaton. This also included a first on 8 for Rosy Renfree and Naomi Harvey. Well done all.
On Friday, 8th I went to Lanivet to attend the funeral of John Toms. It was great to hear the 8 bells ringing open as I walked towards the Church and I remember, from my younger days, that Land Rover which brought him to the Church.
Many towers rang half-muffled for Remembrance Sunday.
Down in the West a full peal was rung in memory of Hedley Stevens Tower Captain and ringer at Landewednack for well over 70 years. Another full peal was rung at Kenwyn in memory of Norman Mattingley which was the 100th peal on the bells. RIP both.
Up ‘ere in the East we held our annual two tower District Practice at Landulph and Botus Fleming. Being a Saturday the attendance was a little lower than usual but nevertheless we all enjoyed the ringing and welcomed a visitor from Bere Ferrers.
On Friday, 22nd Julian sorted out a visit to St. Gennys in the North. The Churchwarden was really pleased that we ascended the tower as nobody had been up there for years! We found the ring of 4 hung dead on a beam but in a good state of repair.
The following day was probably one of the busiest for ringing in Cornwall. The Northern District had an improvers practice at Marhamchurch; Phil T. ran his PIMPS at Perranzabuloe; the Youth band had a practice at Lanivet; Tintagel ringers went on an outing down West; the Teaching Course was held at Wendron; visiting ringers from Devon came to East Cornwall and the Western District had their Dinner. What a full day!
A quarter peal was rung by the local band at Lelant before the Western District Dinner to mark the 70th birthday of Doreen Sullivan. This included Lindsay Eddy who rang the Treble to her first quarter. Well done Lindsay. I said last month that I hoped to see Sarah Lewis ring some more, well ……. she scored her first inside this month. Very well done.
On the last Saturday of the month my final job was to Chair the Standing Committee meeting in the Lychgate Room at Kenwyn. Many things were discussed and we were fortunate enough to have Rev. Andy Earl come along to talk about the current Safeguarding and DBS situation in the Diocese of Truro.
Keep ringing!
