Michael Smaldon

Phillack ringers are sad to record the passing of their Tower Captain, Michael Smaldon, aged 93, on November 27, after a long illness.  Michael last came to the Tower in March, and his health has slowly declined since.

Michael had been ringing Phillack bells for 76 years and attending the Church even longer.  As a child, he accompanied his blind father to Church every Sunday, where his father played the organ for 47 years.

Michael taught many ringers how to ring over the years, including the writer of this notice.  On hearing of his death, the most common comment was, ‘He was such a lovely man!’  And he was.

Michael will be laid to rest on Monday December 19th at 11.30am at Phillack Church, and afterwards at the Crematorium.

The bells of Phillack will be rung at the service.  Michael always claimed they were the best bells in Cornwall!

  • (Note 11.30 is the corrected time for the funeral service. )
